Taking Care of your Hardware

Technologies like computers need to be maintained so that you can be able to utilize its usage and enhance its performance. Of course, you don’t want your money to be wasted in buying your computer and be destroyed due to negligence. Besides, computers are very fragile.

Cleaning

Even if you are not frequently using your computer, it is still prone to acquire dust and dirt from the environment. Dust and dirt might accumulate and too much of them will destroy the system.
You can clean the outer surface with the use of moderate soap and water. But see to it that the liquid will not penetrate to the internal parts. Don’t use harmful chemicals like alcohol unless it is being instructed in the manual. For keyboards, you can use a brush to gently swipe the dust in between the keys.

It is recommended to open your CPU even once in a while to clear up the dust. You can use canned-air or anti-static vacuum. In cleaning your monitor, it is the same in cleaning your multi touch screen or glass touch screen. Don’t touch the screen and gently wipe it with a soft cloth. As much as possible don’t apply any solutions. Always activate your screen saver to save your display monitor. Screen saver recycles the color and eliminates the outline burned image in the monitor.

Cover your computer when not in use to make it dust-free. Too much dust can lead to overheating. And also, you can ventilate your computer by placing it in an air-conditioned room or by placing a fan in front of it. This will prevent overheating and internal temperature problems. Rust can also be a problem to your computer. You can remove this using a special rust cleaning solution.

Handling and Transportation

Computers, specifically, laptops should be placed in an anti-static bag. Avoid dropping or bumping your computers to hard surfaces. For desktop, you should place it in a box with support inside like a Styrofoam to protect it. Hard drive should not be opened unless a professional will do it. To keep your files safe, make sure that you have backed them up in your CD or flash drive. Keep your computers away from being in contact with liquid because this will destroy the internal parts.

Electricity

Make sure that you have plugged your computer into a surge protector. Surge protector will ensure a steady flow of electricity to your computer. This will prevent damage to the system component or data loss. You can use Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS) to plug your computer. This will help you save and will allow you to turn off your computer during power loss. But you should not plug your printer and scanner in the UPS together with your computer as this might caused overloading.
